October 2: Jacob Herman’s grave

1925 October 2nd Friday

A S. E. wind, cloudy & foggy and very damp during day as mist, nearly a rain in evening, so foggy that Will & George nearly got lost coming from O’Kreek late evening, where they went after finishing fence east of here at 4 p.m. Louise to school and I made watermelon preserves and did rest of work. Ed came for his wagon.

1935 October 2nd Wednesday

Some clouds. Strong N.W. wind and dust at times in the forenoon but p.m. no dust, wind, bright and warmer outside, cool indoors. I got meals, with Will’s help getting in water, and helped wash and hung out all washing and turned clothes and brought them in. Fritz helped bring some in after supper for we ate early and Henry stayed for supper as this p.m. he fixed gate S.W. corner barn-lot, he and Sonny got 6 tubs of snap-corn in field this a.m. Fritz fixed fence on Wagners and Will got him at noon for dinner, took him back to work and went to store, on to Pierce’s, where he got milk and some beef. Mr. Jamison went home this eve from Elliotts and Will heard at Pierce’s that Elliott is in Winner Jail for stealing Carr’s Saddle 4th July 1934 at Hidden Timber dance, so reason Jamison is putting up Elliott hay.

1945 October 2nd Tuesday

Cool night and morning but bright warm day. I wore a winter dress to Winner and it got too hot in p.m. Will chored, we ate breakfast, then to Winner to see Attorney C. F. Manson of White River to substitute for C. E. Tablott, Winner, who is in Kentucky, also Will saw Mr. Hooper, Ben’s Attorney, from Gregory. No court to-day so we got our groceries and some wheat for chickens and came home.

1955 October 2nd Sunday

Bright, nice day but cool. I fried chicken, fixed a lunch in box for Cherrie and Jack to be taken by Dave in his Buick Car loaded with canned vegetables, vegetables and jells and frozen vegetables, all perishable ware. Balance of their things in Carmen Harp’s truck, also Stranger and Cookie at Back End. Carmen’s son Jim came along, also Thomas Whiting. When loaded left to get Mrs. Carmen Harp and all to Hot Springs to Jeanne, Jack & Cherrie.

Janis’s left at noon to O’Kreek to see if can get someone to help Chester move to house down hill, 3 room Tenants house as Parkers are gone to Hot Springs, S.D. Thomas, Carmen and Alice will come home to-nite. Carmen took Dave’s Model A to make a run about to use on farm, this part of Payment on Trip hauling Parker’s Things to Hot Springs, also $15.00 cash. Carmen pulled the Model A behind Truck load of Furniture & Horses to leave at Thomas’s and take home later. Athel, David, Jimmie Whiting, Jackie and Jim Harp came in Pick Up to get Linoleum Rug North Room Janis’s new home as Dave gave it to them. Fr. Albert B. Grether of St. Francis, S.D. came after having church at O’Kreek this a.m. He visited awhile and went to Ed Whitings to see them. Will and I to Tenant house and look it over, needs a starter on ceiling Light in North room and lights over Stove (Cook Stove). Tom and Louise Colombe came this eve, stayed until 11:15 p.m., had a Picture of Jacob Herman’s grave at Old Ft. Randall, South Side Missouri River, new Pickstown, 7 miles S.W. Lake Andes. There is a Memorial Stone at Grandma Herman’s Grave at St. Francis, South of Rosebud 7 miles and it has Grandpa Herman’s Name on it also.
