1926 March 25th Thursday

Bright but very cold N.W. wind and quite strong, some clouds morning and eve and a little sleet this morning. A prairie fire rages N.W. of here and burned still at night. William didn’t feel good but went to see about the fire and in eve he and Will went for ducks on the pond near school-house. Will hauled hay and then he and I went to Dick Schmidt’s and met Curt Elshire on the way home so changed wagons and got ours, we stopped at school-house and cut down table and fixed bench and Louise rode home with us.

1936 March 25th Wednesday

Real cold, a S.E. wind and partly cloudy. I got meals, slept in p.m. and picked things out of catalogue but did not finish order. The men gave stock alfalfa and a load of hay and chored and Will worked at Shed and in p.m. they went to a meeting of Sioux Association at Hidden Timber Hall, there was a large crowd there and another meeting Wed., April 1st.

1946 March 25th Monday

Rained some early part of forenoon. Cloudy rest of day, began to clear in west late p.m. This is the Annunciation of Blessed Virgin Mary. Van Epps and Will fed cattle and calves, bulls, then Van Epps went home. Willa the dinner and got his disc and tractor ready to go to disc in rye on Strids.

1956 March 25th Sunday

Another bright warm day, got to 75 above in p.m. in sun. Chester gave cattle hay and hauled out junk. They left for O’Kreek 11:30 a.m. and returned towards evening. I got a meal of fried chicken, gravy, potatoes, roast pork, blueberry pie. Stanley, Pearl, Gary, Curley and Eileen came this evening, visited until 10 p.m.

1926 March 24th Wednesday

Wind blew quite strong N.W. all night so that everything indoors was covered with dust and continued to blow all day but sprinkled and spit some snow, so wasn’t too dusty and got cold towards eve. Sun shone once in p.m. Will rounded in cattle and William was sick so only chored. Mr. Wagner came to-day and went home at 4 p.m. Louise to school and on her return she ate supper as we just finished eating, first meal since breakfast. I cut out my brown dress but was so dusty and cold I couldn’t sew. Not many scholars at school on account of wind and sand-storm.

1936 March 24th Tuesday

Partly cloudy and cold but the men managed to clean north-side of barn and chore. Will had a painful right knee so he finished his chores and went to Jesse Haisch Sale at Mosher. Henry Arcoren came to see Will about his cattle and said they leave Thursday for their new home. I got meals and cut the hog-head to cook.

1946 March 24th Sunday

Bright beautiful day and warm. I got eats and Will chored. We went to 10:30 a.m. church and Will visited with Seth and Stanley Whiting while I, Carol Jean and Norma Fay went to church. Seth has a new baby boy and he will be named Ronnie Eugene to be baptized next Sunday. Will and I came through cattle on State and Wagner land but no calves to-day. We lunched but Will fed calves first at bull-pen. We went to Strid land in p.m., looked at wheat. Rye and alfalfa and this crop we did not harvest last year so Will will disc it in and we hope for a crop this year. We looked at mill near South part of Big Pasture and on through Wm. Pierce pasture to Highway, on to Furreys, and Will went on to Flood place to where Billie, Harley and Harry were filling in a soft spot in the road. They came back and we had a lunch and came home to chore, eat and play solitaire and read. Saw Lew and Mrs. McKee on road east of Schuppans. They are to put 30 head of cattle on our pasture this summer.

1956 March 24th Saturday

Bright and nice. Got up to 83 above in sun in p.m. Vere and Chester gave cattle hay and had dinner and went in Pick Up to Stanley Whiting’s to dehorn and brand and earmark coming yearlings and 5 young bulls were branded also. Chester did chores and they stayed home so not so bad for Will and I this evening.

1926 March 23rd Tuesday

This is Primary Election at O’Kreek and we can’t go because have no way. Bright and beautiful morning but wind started to blow from the west at 10 a.m. and quite warm mid-day and a nice p.m. Will started to fix disc and in p.m. he and I went to Hidden Timber, I to store and Will went to Blacksmith Shop to get disc fixed so stayed indoors. Louise to school. I did only ordinary work and made cookies in a.m. Will took Wisenbergers’ hog home before dinner. Mr. Wagner was here this p.m., also 2 men buying cattle.

1936 March 23rd Monday

Snowed most of the day, was wet and chilly. I got meals, played solitaire, visited with Ben Clausen, who came from Lattimores to get Soldering Iron to fix cream can. Will, LeMoyne and Thomas chored, gave stock feed and worked at roof of cattle shed. Henry Arcoren came for some newspapers to pack things.

1946 March 23rd Saturday

Was a beautiful day. Van Epps and Will fed cattle, ate a lunch, then fed in bull-pen. Van Epps went home. Will took eggs to Whiting Store, saw Mr. Van Epps bringing Van Epps hogs from west bridge when coming from Store.

1956 March 23rd Friday

Bright Day and Vere & Chester usual feeding of cattle and taking Darryl & David & Jimmie to school in a.m. To O’Kreek this evening to a show at Catholic Church basement by Fr. Grether of St. Francis at 8 p.m. Will and I alone, was a very queer feeling with his sight so poorly and I so helpless, it struck us hard but he went to bed and I couldn’t but laid in front room until 11:20 p.m.

1926 March 22nd Monday

Bright and nice forenoon but in p.m. the wind blew quite strong from N.W. and a dusty spell last eve, nice. Noble & William looked for work horse and then they helped Will brand and vaccinate calves, they finished middle p.m. so ate lemon pie and Noble went back to O’Kreek. The men drive the cattle to the hay stacks N.E. of here in the eve. Louise to school and home last eve as she feels bad. I did ordinary work and sewed some. Roy Brandon and Mr. King stopped today. Menz’s went to store.

1936 March 22nd Sunday

N.W. breeze, dusty, cloudy and sun shone only a little and was chilly. I got meals. Will took me to church at 10:30 a.m. and I came home with the Furrey Family in Lee Larmer’s car and Fred was along. We met Will at bridge so Harry rode with him. Louise, Harley and Dorothy stayed here and I visited with them in p.m. Harry went home after dinner. Will, LeMoyne and Thomas butchered a hog yesterday near noon so Furreys took 1/4 home. The men chored some last eve so gave stock this a.m. and chored this eve. Henry Arcoren here this a.m.

1946 March 22nd Friday

Bright, nice day. I got meals with Elsie’s help at noon, for she and Billie came with W. Daniel this morning. He and Will fed cattle. Wm Leo Abbott came horseback to see how Cora Ann is, went back home to get ready as he and Will to Valentine, home before sundown. Abbott went right home horseback. Van Epps cleaned barn and he and Billie went home in car. Elsie washed dishes, swept front room, mopped kitchen and walked home in late p.m. I laid down in p.m. for a long time, played solitaire, visited with Elsie and not much else. Also, Mrs. Clarence (Mae) Wheeler, Perry and Lawrence Klein came from Kleins, they had dinner at Tates and were on way to Wm Chauncey Jr.’s, also inviting folks to a party at Kleins tomorrow night for Wheelers. Lucinia Wheeler and Perry’s girlfriend went to Winner with George Klein. Lucenia is married at Custer, S.D. but her hubby did no come along.

1956 March 22nd Thursday

Bright day. Vere and Chester gave cattle hay and took Darryl, David & Jimmie to school and got them at 4 p.m. The Men did odd jobs, and Vere here on horseback to Abbotts to take over a letter telling them Will is home and W.L. & Billie were cleaning out shed for small calves, they have 20 so far. Mrs. is at Winner with Cora Ann and will be near clinic. Ellen and Elaine came up. I care for Will’s eye, put eye medicine in left eye where cataract taken off. Ellen gives me insulin shots as Will does not see well yet.

March 21

1926 March 21st Sunday

S. E. wind changed to South, very strong, and a fire broke out on hills south of John Carr’s and burnt their hay, a Shed and 10 calves. It is chilly in the wind. I went with Thomas, Lemoyne and Will to the store, and the members of Sioux Association had a meeting at the hall, so I went. Then the fire broke out, and we all went to it. I stayed at Ed’s with Alvina Giroux Foss, Charlotte and Yvonne, and the fire was put out east of Ed’s place, so Will, Harry and Lee came for me. Then we got Thomas with Tom west of Keopps, where it was out, also, then went all around the burnt place in Carr’s pasture to find Lemoyne on tractor with Frank Snyder, and he was at John Carr’s, went home with Tom, brought him to Road at N. E. Corner of Eds, and we came to store. Harry got his car, and no lights, so Will took him and Lee home. Thomas and Lemoyne chored, and I got supper. Will and Mr. Chauncey worked at Shed, and after choring, boys helped.  Mr. Chauncey went to fire also. I mopped and got meals.

1936 March 21st Saturday

1946 March 21st Thursday

Real foggy and a mist was wet on windshield in forenoon but when Will and I got to Winner, was getting brighter and sun shone in afternoon and very warm. Will and Van Epps fed cattle hay and Van Epps went home and we to Winner, got there near 1 p.m., had dinner at Margarets Cafe, saw Agency about renting Lincoln Land, which we got and may lease Kell Land. Will visited with Lee Anderson from Harrington, west Todd County, who is draft board member, also Ted Lein, and they had coffee at Joe’s Cafe. I started to get groceries and saw Mrs. Wm Abbott and Cora Ann is better from pneumonia at General Hospital, also Will saw her. Dorothy Furrey and Delores Abbott were visiting Cora Ann. I saw Mary Chauncey. We went west road and returned that way. I am all in.

1956 March 21st Wednesday

Some clouds this early a.m. but no moisture then Sun in p.m. so Chester, Vere, Thomas and Stanley delivered coming yearlings, vaccinated 3 for Bang, branded those with no brand and it didn’t take long so Athel and Ellen fixed a lunch of boiled Ham Sandwiches, apple and pumpkin pie, coffee and cream, sugar, dill & sweet pickles. Athel took him eggs and some hard bread. Mr. Lester Holtman of Norfolk came to say that his wife, Helen Swagger, had a Patent Fee for her land in our Pasture and we will meet them first week in April to see about buying it at Winner, S.D. Will’s eyes aren’t none too good yet to be outside but will get a shield to protect it from dirt & sun. He went to Rosebud to get Deed or Patent Fee. He is salesman from Norfolk Seed Co., to Valentine, Kayton Feed & Seed Co., Valentine, patronized him. Janis’s got Darryl this eve and our mail.

1926 March 20th Saturday

Bright but hazy around the horizon and S.E. wind changed to South and quite strong and dusty . Will & William went to Frank Cihak, had dinner and found 8 head of Haisch horses east of part of Todd County and late p.m. back home. Louise cleaned the house and I just took care of incubator & setting hens and started dinner and baked bread. Mr. & Mrs. George Menz, Della & Ada came late a.m. and waited until Will came home, they got eggs to set incubator. The Elshires went by with running-gears to get poles at O’Kreek. E. A. Elshire came late evening and took Louise to dance.

1936 March 20th Friday

Quite a strong N.W. wind and some dust. I got meals, played solitaire in p.m. and not much else for I was kind of dumpy. Mr. Chauncey stayed so he, Will, LeMoyne and Thomas worked at Shed all day after LeMoyne and Thomas put one jag of hay in the barn from Stack at N.E. corner of cattle yard. Frank and Mr. Lattimore came horse-back to get 2 cows and a calf of Frank’s as he makes his home at Lattimores now. Bill Smith came again to see Frank as he wants to go to Mission and wants Frank to take him. I thought that a lot of folks at barn at noon, so I made a lot of coffee and only Will, Mr. Chauncey, Thomas and LeMoyne were there.

1946 March 20th Wednesday

Bright, nice day. Will and Van Epps fed cattle hay and cubes, also the bulls and calves hay off of the stacks of their feed rack. They ate dinner and scraped manure away from the feed rack east of Shed here, then got the mail at Whiting Store. Will chored. I got meals, laid down in p.m., played solitaire, rad some, listened to radio and feel better.

1956 March 20th Tuesday

Bright, nice day. Men gave cattle hay. Ellen went out in Pick Up to be at Whiting Store, that is Chester , she came back with Vere on tractor as they gave cattle hay from stacks on wheat grass west of trees so left sled there and Chester went on, came at noon to eat dinner and Dick Whiting brought Will home as Mr. & Mrs. Otis O’Neill went back to Valentine and I guess Pearl was here to-day this p.m. instead of yesterday, because she drank coffee with Will so did not eat dinner. His eye isn’t too good yet and nothing done on the right one and left ear is fair, right one not finished for deafness. Nothing done to eczema. Elaine in Pick Up took Louise home this p.m. and Vere got Darryl at school. Louise got dinner of Potatoes, Roast Beef, and Carrots, and I read.

March 19

1926 March 19th Friday

Was bright and N.W. breeze and a little chilly but out of wind nice & warm. Will went with George Smith to his old place at Wagners and got a truck load of machinery and back here for lunch, then Smith went home. Will & William went down the river and on return we went to the fishing hole and got 47 nice fish. In the evening William went to look for ducks. Louise to school and in evening surprised to see fresh fish. Fred Menz here and went to the store and home via school-house. I did only ordinary work.

1935 March 19th Thursday

Cool, sun shone. I got meals, churned some butter and slept in p.m. Mr. Chauncey came and he and Will worked at Shed. LeMoyne and Thomas put 6 loads hay in big stack on Hampl land and brought one home in eve to put in barn, also gave cattle some cane. Henry came, got back from St. Francis and Rosebud, got milk here in late p.m. Fritz got his clothes and wages. Bill Smith walked here to see Fritz.

1946 March 19th Tuesday

Mostly fair, in fact, beautiful, and snow going fast. W. D., Elsie and Billie came on our tractor near noon, for he and Will gave cattle hay, then he went went to get scraper at his place and he and Will cleaned the cattle shed. Elsie and I got dinner and I rest of meals. I laid down in p.m. and she washed dishes, then Will and Van Epps came in so we ate sandwiches and a mixed drink of lemon, orange and grapefruit. Van Epps went home on tractor around east bull-pen. Marjorie to school on Sheik as snow is nearly gone. Will chored and we lunched in eve.

1956 March 19th Monday

Bright, nice. Men fed cattle. We had a new calf Saturday, March 17, and Vere gave it milk from our canned stock and it is with mother and jumping around this day. Vere took Darryl, David and Jimmie to school, got them at 4 p.m. and the mail, a letter from Will saying that he would be at Valentine tomorrow morning at 9 to 10 a.m., so Chester and Ellen and Elaine went to mission in the Pick Up on account of roads from here to Highway. They called Otis O’Neill, Valentine Ford Garage, to get Will at train and bring him to Hidden Timber on account of roads here. Louise and Mary washed some clothes and got dinner. Harry & Billie came in their car and took Mary home so she could go to school but they went home without having dinner. Louise and I ate alone. Pearl Whiting came to say that Stanley would vaccinate for Bang the three calves that are left, and de-horn the ones not old enough last Fall, so he will come Wednesday and we will try to get word to Abbotts as they said that they would help but roads are bad around to their Place.

March 18

1926 March 18th Thursday

Cloudy around the horizon but bright and S.E. wind changed to N.W. in p.m. and cloudy eve. Will & William picked up things and fussed with horses and after dinner Will & I went to the store and the men hauled hay. Mr. Menz & Fred went to Valentine. Louise to school and in eve tried to solve out how folks or some folks made money. George Smith or Presto came for the night and he & Will went to Wisenbergers.

1936 March 18th Wednesday

N.W. wind cool, quite strong and some dust moved but sun shone all day. I got breakfast, baked bread and washed at our car, not much of a job done. LeMoyne and Thomas chored and cleaned the barn. Mrs. Chauncey brought Mr. and went back home right away. Will and Mr. worked at Shed until near noon, then we all went to Sale east of Old Abbott place, we came home to chore and eat supper. Will bought oats at Kounovsky’s sale so went to store to see if Stanley would haul them tomorrow.

1946 March 18th Monday

Cloudy most of the day, snowed some last night, was nearly 40 above in p.m. I had to lie down at near noon until Will came to eat at 1 p.m. after he and Van Epps gave cattle hay and cubes and fed calves. Van Epps went home for the day. I got eats, wrote in diary, listened to radio, played solitaire, read some. Will chored and read a lot today. We thawed snow for battery water for coming year. Will chored in eve early as snow and none too pleasant outside, he read and listened to radio. Dolly Swanson Furrey went by on horseback to her School at Harry Furrey’s where she stays. Marjorie never went to school today.

1956 March 18th Sunday

Bright, nice day. Louise got a nice supper of Chicken, Gravy, potatoes, dressing, Salad made by Mary, 2 banana-filled pies. I made Jello but Mary finished it by adding fruit mixture. No one came so I laid down in p.m. and slept and slept. Louise and Mary went for a walk to North Tenant house and to barn. When Northwest wind would strike them it was so chilly they came back and we played pitch and casino until eve. They got fuel and eggs. Janis’s went to O’Kreek and back at 5:30 p.m so chored at barn, and Louise gave Vere some eggs and called him the City Boy going for eggs as he was going to coop and shed, and Mary had eggs here, so he got their share. We get 1/2 to give Thomas’s some for milk.

March 17

1926 March 17th Wednesday

Hazy morn & strong N.W. wind in a.m. and bright but not pleasant St. Patrick’s Day on account of wind until in p.m. real nice. Louise to school and home real early as sun high since days longer. William went for horses and had dinner at Elshires and home in p.m. Mr. A. Elshire came over and killed 2 horses for the hogs towards eve. I put eggs in the incubator and made pumpkin pie and the other work. Will went to Menz’s and got the wagon and took the buggy home and in p.m. cleaned the barn. Fred Menz & Mrs. Raymond Knight came for some eggs to set in incubator. Several cars went by this day. LeMoyne came for medicine as Leo & Seth are sick, and brought some meat.

1936 March 17th Saturday

This is St. Patrick’s Day and Birthday of American Legion, 17 years ago in Paris. Sun shone until evening clouded, was cool and a few clouds all day. I got meals and baked custard-pies and slept in p.m. for a long time as I am all in from our trip to Tripp and Gregory Counties yesterday and we had a late supper, for Thomas and LeMoyne put 6 loads of hay in big-stack on Hampls and brought one home and put it in the barn, then fed the cattle a load of cane, for they all came down to the gate near the barn. Mr. Chauncey and Will worked on the shed to-day and talked to the Inspector who came to inspect Fritz at Lattimore’s and Bill Smith at Strids.

1946 March 17th Sunday

Snowed quite a bit last night and to-day, stopped late p.m. This is St. Patrick’s Day. I got meals, laid down in p.m., played solitaire, listened to radio, played rummy and pitch with Will. Van Epps came in p.m. and they gave cattle hay and fed calves grain and hay. I popped corn in eve and drank some beer so went to bed with stomach pains. Will chored and indoors most day.

1956 March 17h Saturday

St. Patrick’s Day. Bright, nice day. Chester, Ellen, Elaine, Darryl and I went in our car to Mission to call Otis O’Neill as he said that he would help us with whatever he could do, so Will may be at Valentine on Train coming from East between 9 and 10 a.m. but day went by and no Will. Men gave cattle 2 Stacks hay this day but staid home this eve, so Louise, Mary and I were alone. Mary and I played pitch as Louise is tired, read and went to sleep in Big Chair so to get ready for Bed, so we quit and Mary went to the bed to take off all the bedding and mattress and Louise fixed the catches. Louise and Mary ironed a lot of clothes.

March 16th

1926 March 16th Tuesday

Bright but cold South wind. Will & I went to Menz’s, got buggy and on to O’Kreek and made 21 applications for pasture lease and saw Dorians and home in eve, went via Haukaas’s also. William got hay this morning and was at Tom’s when we got home, just returned. The Men fixed incubator this morning so I arranged the regulator this eve. Louise to school and was starting to chore when we got home. Some men went through the yard.

1936 March 16th Monday

Quite a few small clouds passed all day, S.W. wind changed to N.W. Sun shone all day and a beautiful sun-set but colder. A sprinkle or only a few drops of rain on wind-shield down north of Hugh Smith’s north of Dallas, for Will and I left at 10 a.m., to Clearfield, then to the Bernie Daugherty Farm to see about getting 80 head of cattle to pasture but only a man there as Mr. was with Mrs. in Sioux City where she is having an operation, then to Winner, ate dinner, then to sale pavilion where Will saw Cliff Smith and Earl Adrians, then to Hugh Smith’s road where Mr. and a truck man were trying to get a truck of wheat out of the mud. Then to Oscar Lundstrom’s 1 1/2 miles north of Dixon, Gregory Co., S. Dak., back to Winner, then to Chas. Ellis where he not home, that was about 10 miles N.W. of Winner, ate Supper, then home at 9 p.m. Frank came in last night so he had to go to White River so after helping LeMoyne put hay in hay-mow, he left for Lattimore’s for all time, will no more work here as he will farm at Lattimores this year, so Will went to Chaunceys but Roy was husking corn for Dan Southwick so he got Thomas Whiting and Thomas and LeMoyne put 4 loads of hay in stack and brought 1 to the barn, then chored and got supper. Knute Strid and Bill Smith came to have Will and I witness a farm-lease between Knute and Oscar Strid and Bill Smith, they went home at 9:30 a.m. so then Will and I hurried to get ready to leave for Tripp County.  Saw some large dirt drifts from the dust-storms of last couple years, north of H. Smith’s and east of Winner, where were the worst.

1946 March 16th Saturday

Rained and changed to snow in eve. Men fed cattle and Van Epps ate dinner then went to Kleins with his cream and eggs but no mail as train late. He broke axle to his car so a long time coming back. Van Epps were at a program at Kleins School last night. Will and I usual choring, eats and rest.

1956 March 16th Friday

Bright day. Chester and Vere gave cattle hay and broke clamps and cable, so Chester, Ellen, Elaine went to Valentine, got them from John Harvey, charged until Will gets home. A letter says he will be released to-day from Clarkson Hospital and home next week. Men gave cattle hay and took Darryl, David, Jimmie Whiting to school. Vere got Darryl and boys late p.m., also the mail. Louise and Mary baked 10 pies and 2 crusts to be filled as Banana Pies. There are 20 pies in deep freeze now, apple, cherry, strawberry, raisin, blueberry and pumpkin
