1926 June 15th Tuesday

Cloudy & cool and rained a shower in morn. George, Will and William built fence south east of Haukaas’s. Louise & Bess did up the work while I went to Tom’s with letters to mail and did a little work rest of day such as meals. Bess read and Louise sewed but had a headache so rested and in eve they went to Hidden Timber to get the mail, rushed to beat a rain that came up in eve and here just before a regular down-pour, also the boys got in. Mr. Smith of Dixon and small son brought 21 head of cattle, branded 2 and left. Jake Wisenberger came from Blacksmith Shop and got some eggs.

1936 June 15th Monday

Cool east breeze. Bright and towards noon a real strong south wind and some dust. I got meals, slept in p.m. Will got the vaccinating outfit at Ora Daywitts and mailed a letter to Sears for enamel for our bed, then the root-beer was ready for bottles so he capped it after I had a spell about all the work to do now. LeMoyne, Thomas and Allie Walton got in the cattle from down the river so they branded, castrated and vaccinated 83 calves, just winter calves were vaccinated. They didn’t work for awhile after dinner on account of the dust and we all went to Pluggetts Show at O’Kreek in the eve and Allie stayed here for night.

1946 June 15th Saturday

Bright, very hot, got to 104 in p.m. but Van Epps, Will and Hank finished stacking alfalfa on Strids, there are 5 stacks, then came to dinner late and it was so hot I made lemonade, gave them beefsteak gravy and potatoes, bread, butter and cookies. I got meals, lay down in forenoon and p.m. but cooked roast, fried hamburger and steak. Van Epps went home and Will and Hank read and stayed in doors until Hank and Will’s haircuts late p.m. Will and Hank got mail, they then cleaned the car. Got hair tools at Abbotts last eve, they are ours. I got things ready to go to White Horse Ranch, that is Lunch.

1956 June 15th Friday

R.E.A. Payment. A very strong South wind and we are very tired but Will looked at cows, then after breakfast he and Leslie went to Wagner. Leslie mowed the South part, has 4 rounds left and Will can rake half. Mr. Guy Harp came this noon, had dinner before coming here. I had to rest a lot in chair in front room and Will came to a dinner of scalloped mackerel fish, potatoes, sauce, ice-tea, bread, butter. After noon, Leslie took sweep out and Will & Mr. Harp in pick-up. Leslie got stacker late p.m. so they put up 1 stack alfalfa. A grader is filling in Abbotts’ yard so W.L. and Billie got our Cat to put dirt near house, also our rake to rake alfalfa, this was yesterday a.m.

1926 June 14th Monday

Cold & cloudy in a.m. but p.m. warmer but still cloudy. George, Will & William went to fence building south of Lew Haukaas’s east line and home in eve. Louise & Bess did up the work and fixed their clothes and Louise fixed over a dress and Bess read a book in p.m. I only did a little work and made out orders. Ed’s boys brought back George’s saddle and Helen & LeMoyne here Sat. also. Henry Arcoren also stopped awhile.

1936 June 14th Sunday

Bright, nice until p.m. was quite warm. I got meals but breakfast was only for Will and I, for Thomas and LeMoyne came in on foot at daylight for they started home in the Whiting truck and it would not go so they left it on flat south of Jamison’s and when Will got me after Mass at 8:30 a.m., he took Thomas to the truck, he fixed it and took it home and stayed there until evening. LeMoyne went to game, Hidden Timber vs. Kibbee, at the store. Ben Clausen was here but he went home as he was fishing so Will and I went to game then around Highway to Wm Pierce’s where Will spoke for Allie Walton to help brand and vaccinate tomorrow.

1946 June 14th Friday

Flag Day. Cool last night, 50 above this morning, strong south to S.E. wind, sun shone and very hot in p.m., got to 90 above. I got breakfast and cooked Dried Prunes for there isn’t any milk and it is a meatless day, only lunch, for Will and Hank went to Lew McKee’s to brand calves, also Wm Van Epps went from home and Dean Peed helped so they castrated and branded 90 calves for McKee and Jessie Lewis. Had dinner and a Big lunch or supper. They went to Winner to get groceries, had front wheels greased on car. Brought 1 gal. ice-cream, we couldn’t eat all of the ice-cream. I played solitaire, wrote in diary and laid down in all the heat and took a nap in p.m.

1956 June 14th Thursday

Flat Day. Bright hot day and South wind strong, no rain. Will went to tell Athel we would go after noon, about 2 p.m., but we left 12:45 p.m. and she was ready. She went to Stanley’s and she and Pearl dressed 11 young fries for freezer this a.m. and she left David and Jimmie there to come with Pearl to swim this late p.m. at Bridge east of store. Gary and Stanley are helping Mike L. cut and stack alfalfa on shares. When we went by Lamoureux Corner, there were 4 men at alfalfa field getting ready to stack, and on return had 7 stacks finished and no one there. We went to Valentine. Got root beer at drive-in on south 20 east of Ainsworth, to Guy Harps and Mr. at Produce and Mrs. at Day and Nite Martens North 20 to East. Leona at home but she went with us to see her dad, then get John Deere repairs, a sledge hammer handle at Hardware Store. First in town, Will had his ear washed out at Hospital by Dr. Brady and got prescriptions at Whitney Drug Store on Main east side. Athel went to see her mother at Night & Day Cafe and Dinner where she is assistant cook, on from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. We took Leona home and got supper at cafe west side Main, on to 20 to Valentine then home before dark or about then. David and Jimmie at home with Thomas and choring. Leona Harp gave Athel some fresh strawberries she picked out of their patch. They have a nice home on a hill, with a garage and some grass on the north side of yard, west of road and garden in back yard. Mr. was home when we came back. He will come tomorrow to help with moving and stacking alfalfa.

1926 June 13th Sunday

Cold, rainy cloudy day after a rainy night. All went to Tom’s dance but Will & I. George and William went to Dorian to play ball with Keya Paha. Louise and Bess went to the store and around to Hidden Timber for a walk. Ben went home to Naper late p.m. Will & I stayed home all day.

1936 June 13th Saturday

Bright, very hot, little breeze at times from south then to N.W. in p.m. but so hot until after sun-set was cooler north breeze. I got meals but not much at noon, for LeMoyne and Thomas took lunch and went to the East and North side of Big Pasture and fixed fence and LeMoyne went through our cattle on way out. Will finished kalsomining our room and started to Paint woodwork. I washed some wood-work and Will did that I couldn’t reach. Will took Thomas and LeMoyne to Hidden Timber Bowery, east of store, and they stayed for the dance given by Elmer Chauncey and Chas McCormick with the help of Wallace Gran who stays at McCormicks now, for Mrs. McCormick is with her parents at Springview with a newborn baby boy.

1946 June 13th Thursday

Fred Larmer’s birthday. Bright, warm, got hot in p.m. and no breeze but mill pointed to S.E. Will and Hank chored and Will killed chickens and Bus McKee helped Mr. Lew McKee and Jesse Lewis came all in pickup. They got ready to brand. Hank went out to get cattle in and Wm Sr., Wm Jr., and Delores Abbott came to bring in cattle from River Pasture. Wm, Elsie and Billie Van Epps came so men branded H-T, ear marked under bit on right, 121 calves, 56 heifers and 65 steer calves. They finished at 3 p.m. but had only 2 to do in p.m., main bunch finished at noon. Delores Abbott went horseback to Whiting Store in afternoon, got back in time to go home with Billie and W.L. We had for dinner potatoes, gravy, fried chicken, pork and beans, pickles, jell, butter, bread, coffee, cream, cake and jello. Lunch of lemonade, cookies, cake, fried chicken. Delores swept front room, set table for 10. Elsie and I did the cooking of meal. Billie and I took a nap in p.m. Elsie washed dishes and there were plenty of them. They took a crippled calf home for Croppy the mother was hard to feed it. A cow died in River Bank in East Pasture. Will, Hank and I took Salt to Big Pasture north of Mill by Strids. We got freezer tub at Wagner place. Ate lunch and quit.

1956 June 13th Wednesday

Cora Ann Abbott and Fred Larmer’s birthdays. Bright, hot day. South wind strong and clouds in late p.m. and an awful wind from South but no rain here. Will and I to Valentine to call Parkers. Jeanne said Dave was working cattle and she cannot find him but will come Sunday to see about job here. We asked Athel if she could drive for us to see her dad at Ainsworth, Nebr. tomorrow and she said she would. Last eve Johnsons took Barbara to Valentine to go home to Rochester, Minn. Home at midnight so no work today.

1926 June 12th Saturday

Bright cool a.m. and real warm in p.m. William, Ben and George went to build fence north of here and Mr. Wheeler came so Will and I went to the city of Winner with a load of hogs and he brought back a load for the store. Louise & Bess made bread, ironed clothes and clean downstairs. Jake Wisenberger came for eggs, also Mr. & Mrs. C. Elshire and Dorothy.

1936 June 12th Friday

Bright, nice until towards noon a real strong north-wind and quite warm. I got meals, for Will went to the store after choring to mail a letter to Mrs. Chas Quigley, Sioux Falls and met W. C. Cate of east Todd Co. who came to fix the horses’ teeth and he and Will ate dinner, took lunch to LeMoyne and Thomas at the windmill on Moore Creek in Big Pasture, then all came home for Mr. Cate fixed Alabam’s tooth and boys had him on the trip so got Schultz cattle in our pasture. LeMoyne took Ben’s roan bull home, then rode the cattle in River Pasture. Will started to Kalsomine the walls in our room.

1946 June 12th Wednesday

Was very strong wind from Northwest and very much lightning about midnight when we got in from O’Kreek Legion Meeting. Men met at Day School and women at Miller home. We came home before lunch. Sun shone until in p.m. showers and again bright evening. Will, Hank and Van Epps put axle on power sweep, and Hank swept some hay away from stacks blown off. Van Epps home after dinner and Will, Hank and I started to Winner. Roy and Babe Drey were going also but east of Pierce’s we couldn’t go so took fence down and went into Pierce’s pasture then on highway via Wm Abbotts but he was at McCormicks putting water in his car. The other members of his family were at home. A bull was out with cows in River Pasture so Hank got him into Bull-pen then he and Will went to Whiting Store and Hank went along. He mailed letters, got mail, groceries and 5 young leghorn roosters to fry tomorrow. I did usual work and plan that tomorrow Elsie can come to work.

1956 June 12th Tuesday

Bright, warm day and some wind. Thomas, Athel, David, Jimmie, Will and I left at 7:30 a.m. to Valentine, Crookston, Kilgore, Cody, Merriman, then on to Gordon, Nebr., then south and east 75 miles above place from Gordon to Hyannis. Parkers are away at Oshkosh, Nebr. to get drivers licenses. We went to Arthur, Nebr., called Oshkosh and no find Parkers, back home, Hyannis to Dublin to small places to Mullin to Thedford then on 83 to Valentine 64 miles. Had refreshments. Called Bob Rothwell Ranch, no Parkers home, so came to leave Thomas to milk cows and us here to retire at 11 p.m., over 300 miles around back to Valentine.

1926 June 11th Friday

Warm and bright in a.m., clouded and wonderful showers in p.m. so cooler then. Ben, George, Will and William made fence north of Wisenburger so took their dinner and home in eve. Louise & Bess ironed clothes and in p.m. cleaned the upstairs and so many bud-bugs in boys rooms, had a time to rid them. I did ordinary work. Mr. Wheeler & family inquired about a load of hogs to town.

1936 June 11th Thursday

Bright, a few thunder-heads and a strong south wind but no rain and it got real warm in p.m. I got breakfast, fixed boys lunch. Will chored, got gas at store and we looked through the cattle in river-pasture on our way to take lunch to Thomas and LeMoyne on road south of Mosher, west of J. T. Hansen’s, then we went to Mission where Will got a list of Schulte from him at Mission Hotel, these we took to Rosebud, had lunch at Bailey Restaurant, to Hospital but Dr. not there. Was an Indian Council and Will listened to it. I stayed in the car. We came back to Mission, got groceries, gas at O’Kreek, to boys north of Earl Snyder’s and went to Snyders to get them and cattle in for the night, to Furreys where we had a beef-steak supper, back to chore and bed.

1946 June 11th Tuesday

Cool, partly cloudy, got real warm in p.m. for sun shone, was 100 above. I got meals, laid down in p.m. Van Epps came with trailer and took cement mixer to Tony Devorak’s, Southeast of John Boyds. He had dinner here on way back, that was yesterday. Today he helped Will and Hank stack nearly 4 stacks of alfalfa on Strids and they broke axle on sweep so Hank took it apart and Will and Van Epps got another one at Haukaas Garage, O’Kreek. Will and I to Legion Meeting in eve at Wilbur Millers, O’Kreek.

1956 June 11th Monday

Bright so Leslie got ready, went in Pick Up to Lyle Bartleson’s to work 41 calves. Vere went to O’Kreek to stay.

1926 June 10th Thursday

Bright and in fact hot and it clouded and rained in eve. Louise and Bess washed and dried, then went swimming in the Keya Paha east of the house. Will & Ben finished Ben’s fence and William finished putting in sudan on Moore’s and George finished relisting corn out here and in p.m. drove cattle from south pasture to east one. I did ordinary work. Mrs. Schmidt came in eve for eggs.

1936 June 10th Wednesday

Bright, nice, cool indoors, a N.E. breeze changed to South and warmer in p.m. I got meals and had to lay down after breakfast for we got in at 12:20 from O’Kreek but when I got up, I managed to wash clothes for Will got in water, turned wringer and machine for sudsing and rinsing, helped me hang out clothes., finished kalsomining ceiling and painted picture-railing in our bed-room. Thomas and LeMoyne went to store. Stanley took them to N.W. Wagner land where they got Schulte cattle. Stanley and Moran brought a cow and calf in truck belonging to Schulte. Moran lives N.W. of here west side of the hills.

1946 June 10th Monday

North wind cool and strong when traveling but sun shone so was hot when car stopped. Will chored and took tractor and went to Abbotts to get rake and Billie drive it. Hank took mower off before breakfast for Will and Harry took Harley over to Strids to bring the Tractor and mower home yesterday p.m. Hank fixed Stacker and sweep and in afternoon the fence at yard east round corral. Will and Billie finished raking at 4 p.m. so they and I went to Valentine to get cable for Stacker and coil for Model A Sweep Power but no groceries, only bread. Had supper at Bob’s Cafe and a spare tire fixed. It was completely broke so needed an inner lining. We took Billie Abbott home and got here at 10 p.m. Hank ate a lunch and was retiring.

1956 June 10th Sunday

Bright day. Johnsons went to look at alfalfa and this eve got cloudy so stayed. Barbara Shamrock of Rochester is there yet. Usual eats & pastime for me. I played solitaire. Will looked at cows here at noon, 2 calves now.

1926 June 9th Wednesday

Strong south wind and in eve clouded & rained some, was cool at times in the breeze. William listed in sudan on Moore’s and George listed in corn where they planted squaw-corn as it didn’t come up. Will & Ben worked on Ben’s fence and in p.m. helped Ed brand some horses that he & LeMoyne brought at noon. Rena, Kenneth, Seth, Leo, Edward, Charlotte & Helen came in p.m. Louise & Bess cleaned the rooms and mopped down-stairs. I cooked meat and canned some by cooking it in oven. Lots of cars stopped yesterday but none to-day.

1936 June 9th Tuesday

Some clouds in a.m. as it rained last night and a cool north breeze all day so kept the door shut and a fire in the range. Will did his chores and went to the store with a case of eggs and got the groceries, kalsomined some at our room (the ceiling) but ran out of white kalsomine so he got some at M. E. Smith’s in p.m. when he and LeMoyne went to Runningview or near there towards Vivian Bridge to find the Wm. Schulte cattle and they would spend the night 10 miles South of the bridge so Thomas, after taking the mares and Mike to the B. J. Wagner land, had the chores done. We ate supper, then Will and I to Legion Meeting at O’Kreek. I baked bread and got the meals, slept in p.m. Thomas and LeMoyne got the horses out of Big Pasture to Lundenmann pasture and brought some in to get mares way and after eating dinner, they took rest to Lundenmann pasture and Will got LeMoyne there.

1946 June 9th Sunday

My mother’s birthday, buried at Spencer, Nebraska. Not so warm until in p.m. sun shone bright, south wind dusty and strong. Will chored, took me to 8:30 a.m. Mass at St. Therese’s Chapel, Hidden Timber, and went to Whiting Store but Bud had key so did not get mail as Bud to Pasture. We stopped at Thomas Jr.’s and Athel said she was not going to church as she was caring for chickens. We got home to a fakish oil stove so I had to cook meat and eats on Range and it was warm. Furreys came before noon and Dorothy’s 14th Birthday Cake was good, 3 layers, 1 chocolate, 1 white, 1 red or Pink, and chocolate icing with white candles. I was glad she brought it for us to eat here. After they went home about 6:30 p.m. Will and I went to St. Francis to get Henry Arcoren, went out to his place and Lavern and Mary Wright were there but they left and Mrs. and Evangeline came to Rosebud to see her mother who is in bed with sprained ankle, they will stay and go back to St. Francis to-morrow. Pick-up bolted near St. Francis so had tired fixed at Keith Wise Station, Rosebud. Saw Mrs. Max Wise and she visited awhile. How to retire at 11 p.m.

1956 June 9th Saturday

Bright day so men worked at machinery and ready or about to mow alfalfa, just sickles to fix. I got eats, played solitaire and slept in p.m. Will had to rest some, too. Will looks at mills in Big Pasture and water O.K. Johnsons are home.

1926 June 8th Tuesday

Bright and real warm. William finished corn an listed in Sudan as George took Louise and Bess to Tripp Co. to look for schools. Ben and Will plowed a strip in garden and then started Ben’s fence. I made bread and heated water to butcher in eve.

1936 June 8th Monday

Bright, nice, a north Breeze quite cool indoors. I got meals but not much dinner, for LeMoyne and Thomas took lunch and fixed the fence around Lundenmann pasture and saddle-horse Cody got away from LeMoyne, brought him down last eve, also Prince and Pete, so LeMoyne walked back for them and Will and I went in car, got LeMoyne and saddle at fence. Cody was tied at Wagner fence N.W. of Jamisons so LeMoyne came back. Will and I to store, took Lester and Anna Mary Elliott to South of their place and got the sausage at Ben’s. Will started to Kalsomine, went to store.

1946 June 8th Saturday

Bright day and north breeze strong. Dorothy Furrey’s 14th Birthday. Will finished mowing on Strids and we went to Winner, took Wm Abbott along. Had dinner at Margaret’s Cafe, malted milk at Sweet Shop. Got groceries, meat at locker, left Abbott home and here to get in cows, feed chickens, read and retire.

1956 June 8th Friday

Dorothy Furrey Schultz’s Birthday at Spearfish, S.D. Bright, nice but cool in morning and wind from South got windy. Vere never got up until late so Will looked at cattle, 18 cows, now 2 calves after breakfast. Men worked at putting sweep and other things in shape to hay (alfalfa). I got eats, had to rest some. Bulls bellow at night, rub in barn lot on machinery to must be shut out tonight. Thomas, Athel, Doris, David, Jimmie, Bob, Patsy and Dannie Whiting at Johnsons’ to visit until midnight. Lyle Bartleson and son Leonard came this eve to say will work their cows. Usual eats and played solitaire and slept for me.

June 5

1926 June 5th Saturday

Bright, nice day. George & William listed in corn. Clausen & Will fixed hog-fence and Will went around cattle and in p.m. after he helped Glen McEachen & a boy start horses home. He and I went to Hidden Timber and in eve George, William & Ben went to the dance. Guy & Ray Bailey & Wm Smith stopped on way to the dance at Tom’s. I did only ordinary work and was so tired all day long.

1936 June 5th Friday

Partly cloudy and sprinkle of rain in a.m. and a real shower after supper. I got meals, friend the rest of the pork and ground the last into sausage and was so all in in evening I could barely move. Will and LeMoyne cased the sausage that Will ground at noon yesterday and he and Thomas reground it last eve and they took it to Ben’s this eve, hung it in his smoke-house and he will smoke it. Ben and Will went to Mission where Will put in his time for road-work and to Valentine where Ben bought his eli repairs and other necessities and Will couldn’t get any more casings so it is up to me to fry rest of the ground meat. Stanley Whiting came in eve and he will go to Winner to-morrow.

1946 June 5th Wednesday

Bright beautiful day. Will chored and Carl Wilkers brought a drill from Boarding School for Will to put in alfalfa so we went to Hank Haukaas’s, saw a tractor south of Oscar’s, so there first, but ti was George to O’Kreek. Hank at Winner so Will asked Herman about using Hank’s fanning mill, came back to Hank’s. Vivian was washing clothes on washboard and baking bread, they are to go to O’Kreek to a dance as Oliver Gunhammer is giving it, he leaves for Army to volunteer as re-enlisting for 3 years. Will and Henrietta fanned the alfalfa seed for Henrietta hauled water and even turned the wheel and is only to be six years old this fall. Johnny, her brother, 9 years old isn’t much on the work, then there is 4 yr. old Patsy and 16 mo. old Peter. We came to Abbotts. Delores and Cora Ann at home, so went down to Roy Dreys. He had been hauling manure, hurt his back so went to Dr. Jansen, Winner, to have it adjusted and Babe was home. Mr. & Mrs. Abbott there in wagon to get setting hens and he and Will will drill in alfalfa to-morrow. Yesterday  when Mr. Boyd and I and Johnny went to house in old garden, Narvin and Donna washed dishes.

1956 June 5th Tuesday

Primary Election. Bright, warm. Vere, Will and I to Hidden Timber to vote, then to Mission, to Valentine, a lot of repairs. Had dinner at Buttercup. Jerry & Barbara washed a lot of clothes and did a lot of work. Thomas, Athel, David, Jimmie, Doris, Bobbie, Patsy and Dannie Whiting came to Johnsons, had to go home in a hurry this eve when rain came. They brought freezer ice-cream.

June 4

1926 June 4th Friday

A shower last night, bright, cool to-day. George & William listed corn on Moore Place. Ben went to O’Kreek to see about getting some posts to fence his place but nothing doing. Will went around the cattle and fixed fence. Ben started to fix our hog-fence. I did only ordinary work and fussed with setting hens. H. Davis gave Ben the address to S.W. 24. Fred went to store and brought our groceries. Mr. & Mrs. Ed Anderson and small daughters were to get eggs to set, nothing doing.

1936 June 4th Thursday

Rained in night and early morning but rest of day cool and bright. I got meals, cooked more meat and some lard, laid down awhile in p.m. LeMoyne went around cattle. Thomas cleaned barn. Will set out tomato plants, also 3 doz. sweet potatoes, then went to the store, mailed letters and after breakfast he and I bottled 50 bottles of root-beer and in p.m. the men planted garden and potatoes and some sweet corn.

1946 June 4th Tuesday

Bright, nice day. I got meals and visited with Narvin, Johnny, Donna and Mrs. John Boyd who came for horseshoes and roosters, 2 for breeding purposes, they went home in p.m. This is Johnny’s 3rd birthday and he played a lot. Doran M. Hamel, subscription agent, for Curtis Publishing Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was here so Narvin help him catch old hens to apply on Saturday Evening Post and Lady’s Home Journal for 2 years each. Will chored, ate breakfast and went to Hidden Timber to vote at Primaries, then on to Mission to have car greased, tires fixed, etc. He had dinner there, so Selective Service Meeting, Rosebud. He is Chairman. Robert Emery and Lee Anderson other members. Charles Hight, White River, is the Clerk. Home with ice-cream.

1956 June 4th Monday

Rained last night sometime around midnight so Lew Wright brought Vere home this morn and Lew slept as Vere had to go to Abbotts with Saddle so Will and Leslie took him in our car. Slid off Abbotts dam so Tractor got them back and they came home, went through our pasture and back same way. Billie Abbott in truck brought Vere and Saddle this eve and Billie right back. Leslie helped Will with Machines.
